Meetings for Worship

Meeting Room

What is a Quaker Meeting for Worship like?

If you have not been to a Quaker meeting before, please read this page!

The bedrock of the Quaker way is the silent meeting for worship. We seek a communal gathered stillness, where we can be open to inspiration from the Spirit of God and find peace of mind, a renewed sense of purpose for living, and joy to wonder at God's creation.

During our meetings for worship some may feel moved to speak: something anyone can do, as all are considered equal. Quakers do not have priests, or a hierarchy, as we find that all people can have a direct relationship with God.

You do not have to be a Quaker to attend Quaker meetings, which are open to anyone.
Arrive a little before the time the meeting should start, so you can find your way about and settle down in time. You will be welcomed at the door, and you can ask as many questions as you like!

There are no priests or ministers, and no-one has a ‘special place’ to sit. Just enter the meeting room and find a chair you like the look of.

The meeting will gradually settle into a very still silence, as everyone sits quietly and relaxes. Some people may read quietly, some may sit with their eyes closed, others may just sit. Most people are trying to ‘centre down’, waiting quietly and humbly for 'the promptings of love and truth in their hearts' which are the 'leadings of God'. Sometimes someone may stand up and speak briefly, if they feel strongly moved. Often there is a sort of ‘theme’ to the meeting, especially if the silence is very deep and ‘gathered’.

Towards the end of the meeting the children (if present) will join the meeting. The meeting will end with two people shaking hands. This will be followed by a short period for 'afterthoughts' from anyone on the exercise of the meeting, followed by some notices, and then tea, coffee and biscuits.

Please join us!

Where we meet

Meetings for Worship at the Meeting House and online

Everyone is welcome to attend in-person or online. It is no longer obligatory to wear a face covering, but precautions such as washing hands on arrival, and maintaining some social distance, are still recommended.

On the first Sunday each month we meet in person at 10-11am, with online participation also provided.

All other Sundays we have an in person meeting at 9-10am (without online participation), and a further in person meeting at 10:30-11:30am with online participation also provided.

We also have an in person meeting on Wednesdays at 12:30-1pm, with online participation also provided.

If you would like to attend online, please e-mail [email protected] asking for the link to log in for meeting. If you do not have a suitable internet connection, you can join us using an ordinary telephone. You can call the Wardens on 01962 864184, to find out how, or ask other questions.

You might like to join about 15 minutes before the start, to allow time to check your connection, and we would hope to offer you basic technical support if required. We will be unable to provide any help from five to ten minutes before the start time, as Meeting will then be settling into silence.

We currently hold meetings for children and young people at 10:30 on the second Sunday of the month. All children and young people are welcome to join these meetings. If you wish to attend with children at any other time please contact Pendella Buchanan at 02380 268627 or [email protected] to discuss.

If you would like further details, please do not hesitate to ask. We look forward to welcoming you.
